ABOUT UB TECH UB Technologies Ltd is a joint venture outfit formed in late 2001 and formally incorporated in 2002. The joint venture partners are Broadband Technologies (BT) Ltd, Lagos which is the majority shareholder with 51% and the University of Benin with 49%. The former, i.e., BT Ltd, is a leading indigenous ICT firm licensed by Nigeria’s National Communication Commission (NCC) to provide international satellite communication services in Nigeria, and actually pioneered the evolution of ICT in the country. Its clients cut across banks, educational institutions, the oil industry, the manufacturing industry and GSM firms. UB Tech is totally independent and operates outside the administrative structure of the University of Benin. Thus its operations are not encumbered by sluggish bureaucracy often typical of government establishments. This firm was set up to provide affordable, sustainable and efficient Internet and other ICT services to the university community (students and staff) with the principal aim of bridging the wide digital divide between the university community and the outside world, bringing ICT services to the doorstep of the university community and drastically reducing internet access costs.VisionThe vision of UB Tech is to be a model joint university-private sector outfit that is responsive to the ICT needs of the University of Benin community for affordable, sustainable and efficient services.MissionThe mission of UB Tech is to deploy suitable resources and technologies in creative and innovative ways in order to make ICT services more affordable to the University of Benin community, thereby raising the standards of teaching, learning and research in the university to world class standards and giving the UNIBEN graduate a competitive edge in the job market. Why UB Tech?Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a fairly recent global phenomenon that has drastically changed the way most things are done in the last decade and a half. Every facet of human and socioeconomic life has not only been touched but has in fact been revolutionized in several cases. These include engineering, banking, communication, journalism, printing, politics, creative arts, education, research, health, agriculture, modern warfare, etc.Sadly, however, Africa in general and Nigeria, in particular, are yet to take maximum advantage of the ICT wind blowing across the world. The situation is even more depressing in Nigerian universities which ought to be pace setters in the promotion and application of ICT in teaching, research and community service. Most Nigerian undergraduates are either completely ICT-illiterate or ICT-inadequate. This status remains largely the same even at the time of graduation. Consequently major employers in the private sector have been complaining for several years now of the inadequacy and ill preparedness of most graduates of Nigerian universities, including many with 1st Class or 2nd Class Upper degrees, for the job market. Most of these employers, such as oil companies, banks and major industrial firms usually subject new graduate employees to further training for a period ranging from 6 - 24 months, mostly to provide exposure to modern trends and techniques including ICT. It is by now obvious to most Nigerians that various governments in Nigeria are either not rich enough or are unwilling to provide Nigerian universities with the required funds to achieve minimum ICT status. UB Tech seeks to deploy resources and technologies designed to provide unprecedented ICT access and exposure to all University of Benin students and staff. A major objective is that every UNIBEN student will have low-cost access to full Internet services (including e-mail communication), become computer-literate, be more entrepreneurally-minded, acquire internationally recognised ICT skills and certifications and be more marketable in the job market on graduation. Thus the average fresh, ICT-equipped UNIBEN graduate is expected have a competitive edge in the job market over their counterparts from other Nigerian universities. | |||
